Philadelphia to Charge Bloggers a Tax

Written by Tom Gilhuley on August 23, 2010 in Marketing & Design News,The Ridiculous,Web 2.Oh!

Get this, the City of Philadelphia is trying to charge the owners of blogs that live in the City, $300! I just read about this Philly blogger fiasco on marketingpilgrim.com. The idea is to make it so bloggers need to pay for a license to blog from Philly. For all my friends in Philly, I hear Delaware has tax-free shopping AND tax-free blogging just over the boarder.

Government always has its problems, however, trying to pay for your financial troubles by charging bloggers a fee for something they’ve always done for free? Ridiculous. Maybe they should start charging city employees for every email they send? Or perhaps charge them a per sheet fee for every page they print out at work? If the plan is to nickel and dime people, might as well spread it around.

I’d love to see them try that here in San Francisco. I think our politicians know better than to jump into that public relations nightmare.

Anyway, spread the word. Hopefully, if this story gets enough media coverage, the “geniuses” in Philly will change their mind.
